Abstract

694,588. Bobbins; stripping waste yarn from bobbins. COURTAULDS, Ltd. Jan. 10, 1952 [Jan. 11, 1951], No. 793/51. Class 120(iii) A flanged bobbin 1, Fig. 4, has in the yarn supporting face of the barrel a single groove 5 parallel to the bobbin axis, and a hole such as 6 in both flanges corresponding to the grooves so that a cutter 8 can be passed through the hole in one of the flanges, along the groove to cut the waste layers of yarn on the bobbin and into or out through the hole in the other flange. Groove 5 may be semi-circular in cross-section and merge i n t o the holes in the flanges, which holes may be tapered inwardly. The cutter may have an inclined cutting edge 9 or one of fish-tail shape as shown, and may be operated by hand or by machine. As shown, Fig. 8, the bobbin is inserted between two hollow centres 10, 11 which engage the tapered holes 6, 7 in the bobbin flanges. Depression of a pedal draws down a rod 14, against a spring 23, so that a cutter 8 carried by rod 14 descends through centre 10, hole 6, groove 5, hole 7 and centre 11. The severed helices of waste yarn are sucked away through a funnel 19 the mouth of which contacts the bobbin barrel and has the same curvature, thereby serving to orient the bobbin with respect to the cutting edge 9 of cutter 8. When the bobbin is removed, centre 10 moves down under the pressure of a spring 15 so that a guide 20 carried by the centre engages and depresses a plunger 21 into a recess in rod 14, thereby preventing cutter 8 from being operated until centre 10 is raised again by the insertion of another bobbin.
