Abstract

694,374. Floors, roofs; pavement lights. BATES, H. K., and BATES, R. H. Sept. 3, 1951 [Sept. 15, 1950], No. 22681/50. Classes 20(iii) and 20(iv) Floors, roofs, ceilings, &c. are formed by supporting a plurality of precast channel sectioned filler units, of a size suitable for easy handling, between precast and pretensioned concrete beams 50 which are supported on rolled steel joists 51 or on pad stones, or walls. The filler units, Fig. 15, are grooved at 62 to rest upon and become flush with the undersurface of the flanges 54 of the beams 50. Reinforcements are enclosed in ribs 61 and some units have end walls 63 to close the run. Precast slabs 66, Fig. 1, rest upon sound or heat insulating pads 65 on the side walls 60 of the units. Modified fillers, Figs. 25, 27, from which a ceiling may be suspended are of inverted channel form, the side walls resting upon the flanges 54 and the tops 67 forming the floor. The filler, Fig. 25, has one closed end and the filler, Fig. 27, is provided with glass tiles 70 to serve as a pavement or roof light. Timber fillets may be skew nailed to one edge of the slabs for the attachment of floorboards &c. and timber inserts 76, 74, along the top and/or bottom edges of distance pieces, Fig. 37, which are used in conjunction with the filler units are provided to secure flooring and/or plasterboard ceiling. The insert along the bottom edge of a distance piece, Fig. 39, extends round the bottom surfaces of the beams and eliminates the necessity for providing counter-battening for attaching the ceiling. Each distance piece is provided with a sunken membrane part which can be broken away to form passages for service pipes &c., the beams and filler units also being provided with apertures and recesses respectively for this purpose. Where the bending moment is reversed e.g. in cantilever structures, the soffit members, having their sides cut back at the ends, are filled in solid with concrete. In constructing floors which are supported over a dividing wall, the beams are bolted together at each end, the filler members being staggered to break joint over the supporting wall. When it is desired to erect a platform having no retaining walls at each end, the beams are bolted together throughout their length to prevent spreading.
