Abstract

693,905. Producing photographs electrically. BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 6, 1950, No. 5565/50. Class 98 (ii). [Also in Group XVI] An electrostatically charged image-wise insulating layer supported on a conductive plate is developed by applying an electrostaticallycharged powder to the layer and simultaneously inducing on the non-insulated area of the plate, by applying an electrostatic field across its thickness, a charge having a polarity opposite to that of the charge on the layer and the same as the charge on the developing powder to repel powder from the non-insulated areas. Preferably the powder is applied between the plate and an adjacent electrode between which the electrostatic field is produced, the potential applied to the electrode being of the same polarity as that of the charge on the layer. As shown, an image-wise insulating layer on a conducting plate 2 on a drum 1 is charged by means of discharge points 13 and, if desired, additional points 15,16, and electrostatic-image developing powder is poured from a store 3 on to the plate to the charged areas of which it adheres, the surplus falling into a receiver 5. Concentric with the drum over the powder-applying region is a part-cylindrical electrode 17 which is held at a potential of the same sign as the charge on the insulating layer on the plate 2, a charge of opposite sign being induced on the uncoated areas of the plate. When a developer powder, comprising an electroscopic powder and a granular carrier which generate opposite triboelectric charges on each other, is fed to the drum, the electroscopic powder having a charge opposite to that on the insulating layer, the uncoated parts of the plate repel the powder which is thus retained only imagewise. The powder image is then transferred to a paper strip 6 fed round the drum by means of a corona discharge from the point 13, whereafter the paper is peeled from the drum by fingers 8, and passed over heaters 12 which fuse the electroscopic powder to the paper, the record so produced being finally wound up at 11. Excess powder remaining on the plate after the transfer is removed by any suitable means 14. Specifications 658,699, 675,398 and 679,715 are referred to.
