774,043. Cleaning metals. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. April 29, 1955 [May 5, 1952], No. 12508/55. Class 82(2) [Also in Groups XXIII and XXXIX] A coupling member 12 for transmitting vibrations from a transducer either directly to a liquid or to a diaphragm in contact with a liquid, comprises a plurality of legs, tapering off gradually (e.g. exponentially) to a neck near the diaphragm and then expanding rapidly to produce a large area for contact with the diaphragm. By this means it is stated that the advantages of the increase in amplitude of the vibrations due to the exponential taper are retained, whilst a large area is still presented to the liquid. As shown Figs. 1, 2 the coupling member comprises two legs of rectangular cross-section. Each of these may however be split to produce four legs of square cross-section. The arrangement may be such that the overall length R-U is equal to a half-wave length or whole wave length, and the ratio of the lengths of transducer and coupling member varied to ensure that the point where they are joined is a point of small stress, if a strong bond between the two elements is not possible, e.g. where the transducer is of the piezo-electric or ceramic type. The embodiment of Figs. 1, 2 uses a magneto strictive driving element having a D.C. polarizing winding 15 and an A.C. energizing winding 14. In an array of such transducers Fig. 7 having the ends of their coupling members immersed in a liquid on a travelling plate of glass metal or plastic which is required to be cleaned. In this case to avoid the induction of A.C. into the polarized windings, for half of the transducers the direction of winding of the A.C. coils, relative to the D.C. coils is opposite to the relative direction for the other half of the transducers.
