Abstract

865,569. Magnetostrictive vibrators; ultrasonic wave couplings. LIBBEY-OWENSFORD GLASS CO. March 10, 1958 [March 18, 1957], No. 7535/58. Class 40 (4). [Also in Groups XXIII, XXVIII and XXXV. A vibrator used at frequencies of 100 c/s. to 30,000 c/s. for removing plaster of Paris from a metal table comprises a battery of six magnetostrictive vibrator units 12 each comprising a nickel core 32, a coupling device 13 and a wear plate 39. The windings are embedded in a body of protective material. Magnetostrictive transducer elements.-U- shaped nickel laminations coated with oxide and of thickness not greater than 0.007 inch are stacked to form cores 32. A common winding 33 embracing all six elements is embedded in a block of insulating material 41 leaving slots 42 to receive the cores 32. A cable 43 comprises input and output leads for the coil. A permanent magnet 34 polarizes each core. Couplings.-The coupling comprises a hollow body which, in horizontal section, Figs. 6, 7, has a polygonal exterior outline and a circular interior. The thickness of the walls tapers from one end to the other. A flange 29 is formed near the junction of the body with the nickel core 32. The coupling is cast in two sections which are subsequently welded together. The welded joint may be parallel to the direction of the vibrations as shown in Fig. 5 or oblique as shown in Fig. 10. In this case, the interengaging surfaces are conical forming a circular dividing line f in a horizontal plane inside the coupling but forming a cusp-shaped dividing line h outside. Assembly.-Six units are secured to a metal frame 24 by strips 30 which are bolted at 31 to the frame 24 so as to grip the flanges 29 on the vibrator units. The units are positioned by pins 27 engaging slots 28 in the flanges. In use, the vibrators may be air cooled or water cooled. A hardened stainless steel wear plate 39 is secured to the coupling 13 by epoxy cement 40. Cleaning operation.-In use, two staggered lines of air-cooled vibrators are mounted on rails 18 so that the wear plates 39 are about 0.06 to 0.1 inch above the table surface. The table 10 is passed beneath the vibrators and liquid 16 is fed between the table and the vibrators. The agitated liquid breaks up the plaster of Paris 11. Cooling air is supplied through a conduit 21. The metal table is used in a process of polishing plate glass, the glass being bedded in plaster of Paris.
