Abstract

877,966. Ultrasonic vibrators; magnetostrictive vibrators. AEROPROJECTS Inc. April 10, 1959, No. 12246/59. Class 40 (4). [Also in Groups XXII and XL (b)] A resonant support for a magnetostrictive vibrator has two quarter-wavelength sections of different lengths. Another support is tuned for operation of the vibrator in a range of frequencies. Single-frequency vibrator.-A magnetostrictive vibrator comprising a transducer 12 and a coupling 20 are supported by a half-wave element 36 which in turn is held at a node by a handle 46. As in Specification 837,279, the halfwave element 36 is secured to the vibrator at an antinode 38 but the free end of the element is constructed of more massive proportions so that the quarter-wave path from the handle 46 to the free end is shorter than the quarter-wave path to the node 38. The half-wave element 36 may be a cylinder, as shown, or may be a number of rods. The vibrator may be used for welding sheets of material 28, 30 and the support may be used for a tool bit 63, Fig. 3, for the removal of metal from rotated work (see Group XXII] Vibrator operates in a band of frequencies.- A vibrator is supported by flanges 140, Fig. 5, to which are attached a number of quarterwave rods or cylinders resonant at frequencies spanning the band. Thus, rods 136, each comprising two quarter-wave sections, may be resonant at 15,100 c/s. and rods 144 may be quarter-wave rods resonant at 14,900 c/s. The generator 113 drives the transducer 112 in the range 14,900 to 15,100 c/s. In the support shown in Fig. 7, the rods 154, 164, 166 are tuned respectively to 14,900 c/s., 15,100 c/s. and 15,000 c/s. The flange 158 by which the vibrator is supported is at a node and the rods 154 are attached to the coupling 120 at an antinode. Specification 837,869 also is referred to.
