Abstract
602,801. Method of abrading. FARRER, J. O. (Industrial Research Corporation). April 14, 1945, No. 9364. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXXV] A method of removing material from a solid body comprises subjecting the solid body primarily or solely to the repeated rapidly successive impinging abrasive impulses of abrasive material in finely comminuted form oscillating at high frequency (400-1,000,000 cycles/sec.) and minute amplitude, the oscillations being transmitted to or engendered in the abrasive material. A nickel rod 20, Fig. 1, mounted at its centre is caused to vibrate longitudinally by a magnetostrictive action generated by two coils 21, 22. The vibrations are transmitted to abrasive material interposed between the tool and the work ; the abrasive may be suspended in a liquid, Fig. 6, and be vibrated by a tool surface 35 to abrade a work surface 37. The tool may be suitably shaped, coated with abrasive and vibrated longitudinally, torsionally or transversely for a variety of grinding operations. The workpiece may also be vibrated. The tool or work may by given an additional macroscopic movement in order to operate on a defined area. Vibrations may be transmitted to the tool' from the vibrator through a column of liquid of a suitably calculated length.
