Abstract
1,166,422. Agitating by ultrasonic vibrations. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 24 April, 1968 [8 June, 1967], No. 19301/68. Heading B1C. [Also in Division H4] A plate 8 which forms the bottom of a cleaning tank 11 or the working wall of an immersible transducer (not shown) has thin, rectangular, non-magnetic coupling members 6 connected thereto at one end for transmission of vibrational energy, layers 7 of magnetostrictive material of less width than the coupling member secured to opposite faces of each coupling member 6, and energising coils 10 electromagnetically coupled to the magnetostrictive layers 7. Members 6 are preferably of aluminium, and layers 7 are of nickel, bonded to members 6 by epoxy resin. The layers 7 cover about one half the surface of members 6 and are centrally disposed for maximum vibratory effectiveness. The height of members 6 and are centrally disposed for and the height of layer 7 is #/4. The members 6 are in groups 9 bonded by epoxy cement to the plate 8, the elements 5 in each group abutting one another at their magnetostrictive layers. Each alternate group 9 is provided with a preformed energising coil 10.
