Abstract

693,718. Refuse-consuming and pulverulent fuel furnaces. VEREINIGTE KESSELWERKE AKT.- GES. Jan. 30, 1951 [Oct. 21, 1950], No. 2336/51. Class 51(i) A fire-box primarily for the combustion of fuels of low calorific value and small particle size having high water and ash content e.g. peat, comprises a plurality of vertical combustion chambers interconnected in side-by-side relationship and adapted to be traversed seriatim by the fuel and air mixture, the interconnection of said chambers being such that the mixture is deflected through approximately 180 degrees on passing from one chamber to the next and wherein a.common grate provided for the completion of the combustion of the heavier fuel particles deposited thereon is arranged at the lower ends of those adjacent chambers which are interconnected at their lower ends. The fire-box shown applied to a boiler in Fig. 1 comprises two combustion chambers 5, 6, air for combustion being supplied via boxes 3 and the space 8 beneath the grate 4. The fuel is fed through pipe 1 from a pulverizer (not shown) passing through a screen and dropping from above into the chamber 5. Additional fuel may be supplied on to the grate through the door 19. Fig. 2 shows a fire-box comprising three combustion chambers the third of which, 16, may be provided with heating surfaces. Cooling tubes such as 9, 10, 11, 12, may line the combustion chambers.
