[Also in Groups XV and XIX] An impulse transmitter suitable for use in the telephone system described in Specification 693,588 includes an attachment which provides a checking digit for comparison with the checking digit shown in the directory. A ratchet-wheel 69 fixed to an extension 63 of the dial shaft is engaged by a pawl 66 on an arm 65 fixed by a bush 67, free on the shaft 63, to a gear 35 which is thus rotated clockwise during dialling and remains stationary during the return (impulse-transmitting) movement of the dial. A rocking member 36 pivoted on the shaft 63 carries gears 39 and 37, 38 which drive the gear 56 and indicator 51 in alternate directions according to the position of a cam 41 rotated through a pawl 46 and ratchet-wheel 43 by the spring-loaded pivoted finger stop 45. A mask 54 mounted on the member 36 alternately obscures one of the pair of symbols on the indicator 51 opposite a small window in the casing (not shown). After a checking digit has been determined, the indicator 51 may be restored to its initial position either by dialling the checking digit (an additional finger hole corresponding to the + symbol being provided in the dial) or by means of a push-button 71, Fig. 8. The indicator 51 is in this case frictionally attached to its shaft 50 by a U-shaped wire 84 and has a ratchet 82 engaged by pawls attached to the flange 81 of a pinion 79 free on the shaft 50. As the button 71 is depressed a cylindrical stop 77 integral with a spring-loaded piston 75 engages the rim of the indicator 51 (which has a recess therefor at its initial position), and a rack 78 integral with the button then engages the pinion 79.
