Class 51(ii) In apparatus for cooling bulk material e.g. cement clinker, or for burning or sintering materials such as cement raw materials, time, or ores, a layer of cement clinker &c. passes continuously in turn over a gas permeable support 1 comprising alternate fixed sections 2 and movable sections 3, an inclined plate 8, and through a discharge tube 9 into a conveyer 10, said support 1 being disposed over an air chamber 5 containing a screw conveyer 11 which conveys fine material falling through the support 1 through a sleeve 14 and an opening 12 into a heap 13 forming a gas seal over the said opening 12. The heap 13 may be formed initially from previously treated material or formed or supplemented by rocking a flap 16 formed in the otherwise imperforate plate 8. In a modification, Fig. 3, the inclined plate is replaced by a grid 19 and the screw conveyer by an endless scraper conveyer 24, the return run of which passes through a casing 25 sealed at its inner end by a flexible flap or flaps. An imperforate inclined plate 20 having an adjustable flap 21 may be provided below part of the grid 19 to prevent all the treated material from falling into the heap 13.
