Abstract

924,346. Cooling furnace charges. POLYSIUS G.m.b.H. Feb. 15, 1962 [March 9, 1961], No. 5923/62. Class 51 (2). In a method of cooling small lumpy material such as cement clinker or burnt limestone in the form of a bed on an air permeable travelling grate cooler by air which is subsequently used wholly as combustion air in a preceding furnacing or kilning plant, a proportion of the total volume of cooling air is passed in crossflow once through the bed of material in a section of the travelling grate immediately adjacent its entry end whilst the remainder of the air is passed in cross-flow two or more times through the bed of material in a following section of grate, beginning at the discharge end of the travelling grate and then consecutively passing through progressively hotter sections of material. The Figure shows how the method may be applied to rotary cement kiln. Material leaving the rotary kiln 1 enters a pre-cooling zone 2 of an air-permeable travelling grate cooler upon which it is then conveyed through the chamber 3 and 4 constituting an after-cooling zone to be discharged from the grate at 5. Below the pre-cooling zone 2 is situated an air chamber 6 into which a fan 7 forces between 20 and 40% of the total cooling air at a high pressure of about 200-300 mm. water column the air escaping through the grate and the bed of material thereon at such velocity as to fluidize the material to the zone 2 lowering the temperature of the material falling on to the said grate to such a degree that it ceases to cake and aggregate in the bed. A fan 10 blows fresh air at a low pressure, say 50 mm. water column into an air chamber 9 situated below the chamber 4 into which air flows through the bed of material on the travelling grate. The low-pressure air is extracted from the chamber 4 by a fan 12 through a duct 11 and is fed to a chamber 8 from which it passes through the bed for a second time, this time passing into the chamber 3 from whence after mixing with the high-pressure air from the fan 7 it passes to the kiln 1.
