Abstract
692,473. Velocity-modulated tubes. KONIG, H. Nov. 16, 1948 [Nov. 20, 1947], No. 29761/48. Class 39(i). In a velocity-modulated tube having " regions " comprising at least one input resonator, one drift space and one output resonator limited by grids to which are applied d.c. voltages or a.c. voltages of a frequency much below that of the highfrequency signal to be modulated, the applied voltages are arranged to produce at least two unidirectional charges of field intensity to improve the energy transfer and so increase the amplification. In. the Figure, the tube comprises a cathode 1, an input resonator 7 with coupling loop 9 and grids 2, 3, a drift tube 13, an output resonator 8 with coupling loop 10 and grids 4, 5, and an anode 6. The resonators 7, 8 and the drift tube 13 are each in two parts, capacity-coupled at 12 and 14, respectively, so that the required potential differences are created between the grids 2 to 5 by connecting the walls of the resonators to tappings on a battery 11. The application of these potentials permits the lengths of the resonators to be selected so that their transit angle is an even multiple of #. In a tube having more than three regions, the transit angle in a resonator having no field charge would be an odd multiple of #. The drift space may be subdivided by further grids to which potentials may be applied to produce unidirectional field changes.
