Abstract

691,552. Making paper &c. tubes. TAMPAX, Inc. Dec. 6, 1950 [June 26, 1950], No. 29885/50. Class 99 (ii). A composite paper &c. tube, particularly for catamenial appliances, comprising two tubes in telescoping relation is made by winding helically on a mandrel a plurality of strips some of which are moistened and coated with adhesive to form an inner tube, and winding helically thereon a further plurality of strips some of which are coated with adhesive to form an outer tube, the inner strips being wound under a greater tension than the outer strips or have a greater moisture content than the outer strips so that, when the tubes are cut and dried, the relative shrinkage of the tubes is such that the inner tube is a frictiontight but slidable fit in the outer tube. The inner strips 6, 7, 8 and the outer strips 9, 10, 11 are fed over guide bars on a pair of supports 2 to a mandrel 1 on which they are wound by an endless belt 3. The strip 6 is fed through a lubricant applying device 6b, Fig. 3, and the strips 7, 8 are fed side by side under a moistening device 16, and tensioning rollers 19, 20, and over an adhesive applying roller 17. Excess adhesive is removed at 21. The strip 9 is fed without treatment, and the strips 10, 11 are coated with adhesive at a lower temperature than the inner strips 7, 8. The wound tube is passed through a heater to set the adhesive, and is cut into lengths which are subjected to prolonged drying.
