Abstract
1,192,279. Slitting fabrics. BEVIS INDUSTRIES Inc. 21 Nov., 1968 [14 June, 1968], No. 55265/68. Heading D1S. A tubular knitted fabric 11 is converted in flat open width form by securing a strip of thermoplastic film 16 longitudinally to the outside of the fabric tube and slitting the fabric along that portion thereof covered by the film. As shown, the flattened tubular fabric 11, e.g. cotton, passes around a driven heated roll 13 maintained at 100-350‹F. and the heated fabric passes between rolls 14, 15. A narrow thermoplastic film 16, e.g. low density polyethylene, is unwound from a roll 17 and is positioned on the fabric as it passes between the rolls 14, 15. The fabric passes around a second drum 21 maintained at approximately the same temperature as the drum 13 to secure the film to the fabric and then around a cooling drum 24. After passing around a guide roller 25, the fabric passes around an internal separator 26 which is grooved to receive a portion of a rotary slitter 27 which cuts the fabric along the part covered by the film. The fabric is fed forwards by a roll 28 and is guided by the separator to open width form on a belt conveyor 29. The thermoplastic film prevents unravelling of the fabric edges but excess film may be stripped therefrom.
