Abstract

1,034,837. Winding webs. F.M.C. CORPORATION. June 4, 1963 [June 25, 1962], No. 22194/63. Heading B6B. [Also in Divisions B5, B8 and D1] The free end of a rolled paper web is secured by applying thermoplastic material at or adjacent the end and heat sealing it in place. Apparatus described includes additionally means for forming the rolls, which may be of paper towelling, toilet tissue &c. The web 18, which may have a width which is a multiple of that of the finished rolls, is fed round a perforating roll 20 to means for applying the adhesive, e.g. polyethylene in powder form. This consists of a hopper 62 the base of which is formed by a roll 66 having a knurled pattern 86 on its surface into which the powder is tamped by resilient blades on an agitator 100. The roll is rotatable by pneumatic means 76 to cause the knurled portions to pass out of the hopper beneath a wiper blade and into position to be engaged by a rotating brush 110, swung forward by pneumatic means 120 to brush the adhesive on to the web beneath. A plate 156 presses the powder into the web against a roll 40. From the roll 40, the web passes on to one of a series of cores 34 carried by chains 36 which are presented in turn to known winding means to form the roll. A reciprocating bar 40 severs the web at a line of perforations and a heated roller 194 engages it in transit to seal the end. The extreme end of the web may be unsecured to facilitate freeing it in use. The knurling on the roller 66 may be in the form of continuous bands or over the whole roll length and its motion may be unidirectional.
