Abstract

1,177,064. Slitting apparatus. CHAMBON Ltd. 17 April, 1967 [15 April, 1966], No. 16668/66. Heading B4B. Apparatus for slitting flexible web material such as paper or cardboard comprises means for passing a web to be slit past a cutting edge in contact therewith and means for vibrating the cutting edge at a frequency in the sonic or ultrasonic range. In the form shown, a web 21 unwound from a roll 1 is slit and rewound into separate rolls 3, 4, the slitting being effected by the cutting edge 22 of a spring-loaded knife 6 pivoted to the framework 20 at 7, the knife being provided with a vibrator 9 actuated by a pulse generator 24 which may be mechanical or be an electronic multi-vibrator. The knife may also be provided with a heater. A plurality of knives may be used. In a modification, the web unwound from the roll (10), Fig. 3 (not shown), is divided into narrower rolls (13, 14), which are rewound, by means of a knife (16) co-operating with the circumferential groove (25), Fig. 4 (not shown), of a support roller (12), the knife, which is clamped at one end, being provided with a vibrator (18) actuated by a pulse generator (24).
