Abstract

1330863 Handling web material IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 June 1971 [6 July 1970] 32671/70 Heading B8R [Also in Division B4] Apparatus for slitting a moving web, e.g. of oriented polypropylene or other thermoplastic material, into at least one strip comprises web slitting means arranged for reciprocation transversely of the web travel, and means for adjusting the position of the or each strip relative to a roll 12 being formed so that the roll 12 is formed with one strip edge substantially in a plane perpendicular to the roll axis. The slitting means may comprise knives, hot gas jets, wires or laser beams, &c., and a flattened tubular film 1 may be slit into two separate layers by two knives which reciprocate between positions 2, 3 and 4, 5, the layers being wound into separate rolls. Alternatively, Fig. 5 (not shown), knife edges (14), (15) may penetrate respectively only the lower and upper film portions of the tube (13), producing two strips of generally J-section which are then unfolded, or a single slit may be formed in the tube prior to unfolding. The strip position is adjusted by means of bars 7, 8 of a frame 9, pivotable about an axis 10 to shift the web laterally, with pneumatic, photo-electric, mechanical or capacitance-responsive sensing means 11, and Fig. 7 (not shown), monitoring one edge of the strip 6 to control the frame 9, and ensure a uniform lateral position of the wound strip edge.
