Abstract

588,810. Cutting-machines for fabrics. WAGNER, W. B. Nov. 26,1945, No. 31916. [Class 31 (i)] Fabrics formed from threads or yarns of a thermoplastic synthetic material such as cellulose acetate are cut to form ribbons by means of an unheated cutting device such as a disc cutter 13, which presses a web 11 of the fabric into contact with a heated roller 2. The web 11 is fed from a roll 1 by feed rollers 3, 4, 5, and passes over guide bars 6, 7 which normally tend to keep the web out of contact with the roller 2. The roller 2 is heated by an electrical coil to a temperature not less than 350‹C, and the pressure of the knife or knives on the roller, and the speed of the web are adjusted so that the cutting and fusing of the severed threads together are effected without substantial decomposition of the fabric. A number of cutters 13 are arranged side by side, and are mounted in forked members 14 carried by bars 15 supported from a fitted girder 9 and a pivotally supported girder 12, and alternate cutters are similarly supported from two sets of girders 25, 26. Adjustable springs are arranged between the girders 12 and the ends 19 of the bars 15. To control the heating effect the cutters 13 may coact with grooved parts 28 of the roller 2 as shown in Fig. 4, which enable fusion to take place over a wider area than when the roller 2 is not grooved. Or the roller 2 may be fitted with a number of rings 8, Figs. 6 and 8; in heat connection with the roller, and these rings can be grooved, or provided with chamfered edges 29, 31, Fig. 6, or formed with slots 32, Fig. 8, which may be also formed with grooves 33. Edges of fusion occur where the fabric touches the edges 32, 34 of the slots, and this gives the effect of a woven edge. The apparatus may be used to form a hollow ribbon by treating superposed webs. The roller 2 and its co-operating knives may be adjustable transversely across the machine frame to compensate for wavering of the fabric. Specifications 477,662 and 544,379 are referred to.
