Abstract

691,275. Valves and valve gear. COLOMBO. E. Nov. 24, 1950 [Dec. 5, 1949; Nov. 9, 1950]. No. 28834/50. Class 7 (vi). A rotary valve controlling inlet and exhaust ports is intermittently rotated by a system of cams acting in succession upon a rotor member transmitting motion to the valve and arranged so that the valve rotation is halted during the compression and working strokes. In Fig. 1 the valve 4 is keyed to a sleeve 6 rotated by a wheel 13 on a shaft 12 carrying sets of rollers 11 actuated by three cams 10 on a shaft 9. The valve 4, Fig. 5a, has diametrically opposed ports D, D<SP>1</SP>, which are rotated by the first cam 10 to open the exhaust ports S. S', when there is a slight dwell in rotation before the second cam rotates the valve until the inlet ports A, A<SP>1</SP> are opened. The third cam then rotates the valve into the position shown in which it remains stationary during the compression and working strokes. An annular cam on the sleeve 6 may co-operate with the stem 5 to lift the valve 4 slightly off its seat during rotation. In a modification, Fig. 3, a shaft 9 drives two parallel shafts 21 carrying cams 22 which engage rollers 19 on a rotor 16 keyed to the valve stem 5. The load on the valve is relieved during rotation by a cam 27 which intermittently actuates a lever 26 keyed to a pin 24 screwing in a sleeve 25, whereby the pin is depressed to lift the valve off its seat. The valve 4 may be hollow and cooled by oil circulated therethrough.
