Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce fuel consumption and improve running performance under a low load, by altering the opening/closing timing of an exhaust valve relatively to an intake valve, controlling the overlap of operation of the intake and the exhaust valves depending on the condition of running and by increasing or decreasing the ratio of residual gas in a cylinder. CONSTITUTION:A plus cam 8 for an intake valve and a cam 9 for an exhaust valve are provided on the first cam shaft 6. A munus cam 10 for the intake valve is provided on the second cam shaft 7 in face of the plus cam 8. The rotation of an engine crank sprokwt is transmitted to the first cam shaft 6. The rotation of the first cam shaft 6 is transmitted to the second cam shaft 7. A differential gear mechanism 23 equipped between the second cam shaft 7 and a gear 20 is provided with a tilting shaft 25 to change the rotational phase of the cam shafts 6, 7. A tension roller is provided between a cam sprocket and the crank sprocket to change a rotational phase.
