682,628. Valve-gear; induction pipes. BORGWARD, C. F. W. July 20, 1950 [July 20. 1949], No. 18148/50. Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi). A multicylinder engine having two inlet valves in each cylinder, the valves being arranged in two sets which include one valve from each cylinder and are fed with mixture by separate manifolds, one or each set being capable of being rendered operative or inoperative while the other is operatirig, is characterised in that one set is timed for low speeds and the other for high speeds and the cross section of the manifold supplying the low speed valves is smaller than that of the other manifold. As shown, each cylinder has inlet valves b<SP>1</SP> b<SP>2</SP>, the set of valves b<SP>1</SP> being fed by a manifold c and the set b<SP>2</SP> bv a smaller manifold d. The valve b<SP>1</SP> is operated by a tappet f and rocker arm g which pivots on a roller n', carried by a link l<SP>1</SP>, pivoted at m<SP>1</SP>, to a crank arm k<SP>1</SP> pivoted on a shaft h. The roller n' abuts against the lower surface of a lever 0<SP>1</SP> pivoted on a shaft p and adjustable to vary the valve clearance. The valve b<SP>2</SP> is operated by a similar mechanism, the valve rocker being pivoted on a roller n<SP>2</SP>, Fig. 2, carried by a link l<SP>2</SP> attached to a crank k<SP>2</SP> pivoted at i. Rotation of the arms k<SP>1</SP>, k<SP>2</SP> causes lateral movement of'the rollers n<SP>1</SP>, n<SP>2</SP> whereby the valve stroke is altered and the valves put out of operation when the rollers n', n<SP>2</SP> reach a position directly above the valve stem. At low speeds the valves b<SP>2</SP> and manifold d are in operation, and above a predetermined speed the shafts h, i are rotated to brig the valves b<SP>1</SP> into operation and put the valves b<SP>2</SP> out of operation. Alternatively the valves b<SP>2</SP> may remain in operation after the valves b<SP>1</SP> are brought into operation.
