For use with sheet material having form. ations such as perforations, the mechanism comprises a rigid member for supporting the sheet material, a movable member mounted on the rigid member and spring biased thereto, and a detent yieldably mounted on the movable member, the detent being arranged to be kept depressed by contact with the sheet material and to permit unhindered movement of the latter until the detent engages a formation, when it can be advanced a limited distance along with the sheet material, and means, such as a lever attached to the movable member and extending through a casing for the mechanism, to release the detent from the formation so that it can return to a position for bearing against the sheet material. As shown in Figs. 3 and 6 for use with sheet material having a double series of spaced perforations 58, the movable member 66 is mounted under the rigid member 60 and a " yieldable mounting means" 74 pivoted at 78 to the movable member 66 permits a pair of detents 82 to project through perforations 70 of member 66 and 62 of member 60 to engage the perforations 58 of the sheet material and gradually stop movement of the latter. Lever 72 rigidly attached to the movable member 66 enables, by depression of push button 86, rocking of the movable member 66, against the bias of spring 90, to permit release of the detents 82 from perforations 58 of the sheet material. A pair of sheet materials may be mounted at positions 22, 24 (Fig. 3), and led between " pressure applying elements " 28, 30 so that movement of both sheet materials may be arrested by the detents engaging in perforations of one of them.
