The rotary hook 17 of a zig-zag sewing- machine is driven from an extension of the shaft carrying the needle-vibrating cam 5, so that only one driving connection with the main shaft 1 is required. The cam shaft, which rotates at half the speed of the shaft 1, is extended at 4 and has a sliding connection 13, to allow for possible misalignment, with a lower section 9 driving the hook 17 through a shaft 12 and two sets of 1-to-2 gearing 10, 14, so that the hook runs at twice the speed of the shaft 1. Any form of gearing may be used.
