Abstract

689,252. Extruding coatings on wire. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. July 6, 1951 [July 6, 1950], No. 16935/50. Addition to 564,324. Class 87 (ii). Relates to the controlled cooling of extruded polyethylene coatings on wire. The coated wire issues from an extrusion nozzle 1 at about 165‹ C., and passes through a tube 4 to which it is coupled by a bayonet joint 2, 3. From tube 4 it passes through a tube 6 and out through a gland 7. The tube 6 is filled with water under pressure, water entering at 13 and leaving at 14 through a valve 15. The tube is heated by water or electric jackets 9, 10, lagged at two portions 11, 11', and is not heated at the gland end portion 20. The water entering at 13 is at about 20‹ C. and as it travels from right to left it is raised to 90‹ C. by jacket 10, remains at about 90‹ C. within the first lagged portion 11', is raised to 105‹ C. by jacket 9, and flows out at about 105‹ C. through pipe 14. The result is that the polyethylene coating is cooled from 165‹ C. to between 105 and 110‹ C. within jacket 9, is solidified within lagging 11', and in zone 20 is cooled to 35‹ C. Instead of a closed tube 6 an open trough may be used if the cooling liquid is capable of being heated to 105‹ C. without boiling.
