Abstract

[Also in Division H2] A method of applying a thermoplastic sleeve 5 to a thermoplastic covered member such as a rod, tube, or, in particular, an electric cable at a position where the covering has been removed, comprises moving a heated die 6 from left to right, Fig. 1, the die having a bottle-neck shaped bore 10 which moulds the sleeve 5 on to bared portion 3. The portion 3 may be the joint between two cables 1, 2 and the covering 4 and sleeve 5 may both be of the same material, e.g. polyethylene, or the sleeve may be of heat shrinkable material. Die 6 slides on bars 7, 8, fixed to a stop member 9, and they may be curved to correspond to a curved portion 3. Any tendency for the sleeve 5 to buckle may be reduced by positioning compression springs (not shown) between the sleeve and stop member 9 and change in length of the springs also provides a visual indication that the speed of traverse of the die and/or its temperature require adjustment. The rear end of die 6 may be cooled by compressed air or water and may be coated at its inner surface with PTFE. The die 6 and/or sleeve 5 may be split.
