Abstract

631,127. Making compound electric conductors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and MAYER, S. E. Jan. 20, 1947, No. 1786. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Drawing; extruding.-Aluminium - sheathed cables are made by extruding an aluminium tube around the insulated core so that it is spaced apart from the core, the core being protected from excessive heat in the extrusion press, and then reducing the diameter of the tube, after cooling, but while the temperature thereof is still above the recrystallization temperature, to form a close-fitting sheath around the core. An insulated core 1 is fed through a hollow mandrel 2 passing through the extrusion chamber 3. An aluminium tube 10 is extruded through the annular die 8. The tube 10 may be cooled by a water spray 11 before passing through the reducing die 13. The mandrel 2 may have hollow walls for the circulation of cooling liquid, and may also be provided with an external layer of heat-insulating material for the added protection of the core 1, and to avoid the cooling of the aluminium in the extrusion chamber 3.
