Abstract

765,367. Extruding; working at specified temperatures. SCHLOEMANN AKT.-GES. Sept. 8, 1954 [Nov. 20, 1953], No. 25995/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (4). In the sheathing of heat-sensitive cables or extruded rods or tubes of synthetic material, with heated metal, particularly lead or aluminium, by means of an extrusion press having a cooled die and mandrel and a cooling device, such as a sprinkler, for acting on the sheath as it leaves the die, and wherein the extrusion is stopped whilst the press container is recharged, the speed of extrusion is gradually reduced before each stop period with continuance of the cooling, in such a manner that the cable or the like is not damaged by heat but the temperature at the extrusion die is maintained sufficiently high for extrusion to be resumed. The extrusion speed is preferably 10 centimetres per second and is gradually reduced to zero in one minute. If the stop period is prolonged the coolant supply to the die and mandrel may be throttled to prevent the temperature falling below a predetermined value. Thermocouples may be provided on the mandrel and/or die for indicating the temperature and enabling the supply of coolant to be controlled automatically. An example is given of a cable of 20 millimetres diameter insulated with dry or impregnated paper, sheathed with aluminium to a thickness of one millimetre. The initial temperature of the aluminium is 530‹ C. and the temperature of the die and mandrel is cooled to 180‹ C. during recharging.
