Abstract

903,207. Extruding cable sheaths. PIRELLI S.p.a. March 27, 1961 [April 11, 1960], No. 11041/61. Class 83 (4). A cable sheath 3 is formed by supplying molten metal, particularly aluminium, to an extrusion nozzle 1, 2 under atmospheric pressure, applying to the sheath already extruded on intermittent tractive force in an axial direction away from the nozzle so that the extrusion proceeds in steps, and cooling the molten metal in the vicinity of the nozzle. The molten aluminium is fed by gravity at atmospheric pressure into chamber 4 where its temperature is maintained by a heater 5. A cooling fluid is circulated through chamber 6 surrounding the nozzle and a low melting point alloy of lead, bismuth cadmium and/or tin, which has a lower melting point than the extrusion metal, is fed from a reservoir 9 by a pump 10 to a groove 12 surrounding the extruded sheath 3. This alloy reduces friction in the nozzle and is subsequently collected in a funnel 13 leading to the reservoir. A fluid such as water is sprayed on to the extruded sheath from nozzle 16. The intermittent tractive force is applied to the sheath by projections 19 of hard rubber on contra-rotating rollers 17, 18, Fig. 2, which are carried by levers 22, 23 adjusted by a screw 26. The number and circumferential length of the projections may be varied and the speed of the rollers may be adjusted. Alternatively, the tractive force may be applied by fluid pressure reciprocated jaws. Finally, the sheath is reduced in diameter and into contact with the cable core by a die or rolls.
