Abstract
1,120,045. Extruding composite tubing. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 March, 1967 [31 March, 1966], No. 14273/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] A composite tube is made by extruding a first tube from nozzle 14, cooling it internally by air from chamber 18 and externally by air from a ring 19, hauling the tube along mandrel 1 to a second extrusion nozzle 23 where a second tube is deposited on the first, contact being ensured by applying a vacuum to chamber 26, and cooling the composite tube by means of a second air ring 27 adjacent the downstream end of mandrel 1. Mandrel 1 has an external diameter adjacent and downstream of nozzle 14 somewhat greater than the required internal diameter of the composite tubing, a portion (4), Fig. 2 (not shown), which does not contact the tubing apart possibly from one or more localized portions (5) which have substantially the same diameter as that of the composite tube, and a downstream portion (3) which lies adjacent and downstream of nozzle 23 and which is of the required internal diameter of the composite tubing. Portion (5) has axial grooves and portion (3) a helical groove (7) for the passage of air. The mandrel which may have a matt surface, e.g. a sand-blasted surface, to reduce frictional effects, is coo'ed internally by water flowing in at conduit (9) and out at conduit (10) and is provided with a support-air conduit (11). Preferably the first tube is surface-oxidized before reaching nozzle 23 by corona-discharge, flame or hot air treatment or subjection to a reactive gas such as ozone or chlorine. As shown, a high potential electrode 21 surrounds mandrel 1 adjacent a portion (5) thereof which forms the second electrode and the mandrel is earthed as at 22. The composite tube may comprise plastics materials of the same constitution but differing in physical properties, e.g. polyethylene of different melt index, and/or content of additives, e.g. pigments, stabilizers, antistatic agents, but preferably the plastics materials are different, e.g. polyethylene coated with nylon. Specific further combination materials mentioned are polypropylene, poly - 4 - methyl - pentene - 1, P.V.C., vinylidene chloride polymers and copolymers, copolymers of ethylene with, e.g. vinyl esters or acrylates. Further nozzles may be employed along the mandrel to increase the number of layers.
