Abstract

1343816 Crosshead extrusion die INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 22 April 1971 [23 April 1970] 10712/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division H1] In an extrusion crosshead die wherein a flat layer of a plurality of wires 19 is coated with rubber, polyethylene, polypropylene, copolymers thereof, or polyvinyl chloride material, to form a flat cable, the material is applied within the die on each side to the flat wire layer 19 as a layer of material which is of rectangular section and each whereof has been delivered from the extrusion screw along a rectangular section helical passage defining flow paths of equal length across the rectangular section. In the embodiment the screw 1 discharges, at a conical and chamfered end thereof, through a filter screen 5 into a pair of semi-annular divergent passage 7 of an adapter 10, connecting to die channels 7a, 7b which are each of a section changing progressively to rectangular and each discharge into a rectangular section helical channel defined by a groove 81, or 91, extending around cylindrical members 8, 9, from the outer to the inner side thereof, to discharge the rectangular section material layers within the die on either side of the flat wire layer 19. The members 8, 9, are each keyed within the die, and their axes extend at an angle to the inlet extrusion axis of the crosshead of preferably less than 75 degrees and at half, e.g. 45 degrees, the crosshead angle, e.g. 90 degrees, between inlet and outlet extrusion axes of the crosshead. The crosshead angles may also be 45 or 60 degrees. The crosshead die is fixed to the extruder barrel by a cap screw 2, and upper crosshead parts 13a, 12a are locked in the extrusion position by a device, by means of the handle 16 whereof they are separable from the lower die parts 12b, 13b for clearing of the crosshead. The die is heated to a temperature measured by thermocouples 14. The die extrusion orifice 17 may be shaped to provide grooves in the extruded cable intermediate the wire strands and the orifice cross-section dimensions are 10% greater than that of the cooled cable.
