Abstract
1,201,735. Cooling extrusion-coated cores. SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 Jan., 1969 [9 Jan., 1968 (2)], No. 1328/69. Heading B5A. In the process of coating a wire 1 with plastics by passage through an extrusion head 3<SP>1</SP>, the coated wire 1<SP>1</SP> is cooled by liquid from a spray 10 and the energy of vibrations set up in the coated wire is absorbed by passage through a device 9 whose length in the direction of movement of the wire is less than the corresponding length of spray 10. As shown, device 9 is a water trough situated upstream of spray 10. Alternatively the trough may be situated downstream of spray 10 but preferably is situated between two sprays 10, Fig. 3 (not shown). Modified forms of device 9 include the use of two troughs (12), Fig. 5 (not shown), interconnected by a conduit (14) which may act as an electrode in the measurement of coaxial capacitance, or two troughs (12) with a V-shaped trough therebetween, but not connected to troughs 12. Further, device 9 may comprise a trough (12), Fig. 6 (not shown), and a sponge (15) therein through which the coated wire passes. Various spray arrangements are doscribed, Figs. 7-9 (not shown), and the apparatus may include a water removal device 7, Fig. 2, e.g. an air wiper or sponge. According to the invention the use of spray cooling allows the haul-off speed to be increased without stretching of the wire. Comparison is made with water trough cooling, Fig. 10 (not shown).
