Abstract
688,812. Sliding clasp fasteners. WAHL BROS. Aug. 10, 1951, No. 18856/51. Class 44 A sliding clasp fastener comprises two rows of semi-cylindrical elements 1 threaded on cords 10 passing through bores 2 in the elements so that they are arranged in opposed pairs, bores 3 in the elements form parallel paths and communicate with the flat faces of the elements by channels 5, the bores and channels having bevelled edges 4. The rows of elements are united by a tape 41 having beaded edges 15 adapted to be drawn through the aligned bores 3 by a pull-tab 17 having thickened diverging edges 18 engaging in the bores 3 to draw the elements together. The side faces 8 of the elements are chamfered off in curved or plane surfaces to allow the row of united fastener elements to bend sideways. The other end of the tape passes over a pulley 24 connected to a pull-tab 28 and is anchored to the attachment strips 26 of the elements. Beaded edges 27 of the attachment strips engage in openings 7 in the elements. A string 12 may be tied around the cords 10 between the first pair of elements and the second pair to limit the opening of the fastener. The tab 14 is pulled to draw the tape 14 out of the elements and so open the fastener. If the fastener is to be curved in the plane of the meeting faces of the elements e.g. for a curved top handbag, one side (e.g. the upper) of each element is larger than the other so that the side walls of the elements taper towards each other.
