Abstract

687,315. Firearms. BREVETS AEROMECANIQUES SOC. ANON. March 14, 1951 [March 30, 1950], No. 6206/51. Class 92(ii) Relates to self-loading firearms of the kind in which the breech-block is temporarily locked in the firing position by a strikercarrying reciprocating unit which moves forward relatively to the breech-block after the latter 'has reached the firing position. According to the invention the breech-block is carried by the unit and is constituted by two elements 3a, 3b, which are movable transversely into locking engagement with the breech casing 2. The reciprocating unit shown comprises two bars 6a sliding in guideways 2a and interconnected by a cross-piece 6b which carries a block 6 fitted with a striker 7. The breech-block elements 3a, 3b are slidably supported on the block, are recessed at Ta, Tb to engage the base 5a of a cartridge 5, and have inclined faces s which are engaged by inclined faces S on the block 6 when the latter partakes of its forward relative movement, thus causing the element to move about an axis X-X<SP>1</SP> into locking engagement with hard metal inserts 4 in the breech casing. Trigger stops 6c are provided on the block 6, and projections 6d are provided on the cross-piece 6b for determining the limit frontward position' of elements 3a, 3b, and for compelling the elements to move towards each other at the beginning of the recoil stroke of the unit. The elements are recessed to receive the trunnion 9b of the extractor 9, the recesses being such as to permit the elements to move freely about the axis X-X<SP>1</SP>. The recoil movement of the unit is - effected by gases tapped from the barrel and fed through conduits 12 to chambers 13 in front of the bars 6a. Racks 14 on these bars engage with a pinion 15 on a sliding member 16, the pinion meshing also with a fixed rack 17 on the breech casing. Each sliding member 16, which is engaged by a return spring 18, thus has half the amplitude of the sliding unit. This return system for the unit forms the subject of Specification 687,339. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown) rollers may be provided in place of the faces S on the block 6.
