Abstract

574,352. Automatic guns. MOTLEY, L. Feb. 19, 1943, No. 2797. [Class 92 (ii)] The breech block 2 of an automatic gun is locked to the barrel 1 by a biassed member 4 which moves under its bias into the locking position, when the breech block is in its forward position, independently of any movement, of the barrel relatively to the fixed part of the gun mounting, unlocking being effected by a device which is slidably mounted on the breech block and which is driven rearwardly to effect the unlocking when the barrel recoils on a shot being fired. In the construction shown, the breech-block 2 is fitted with a pivoted member 4 adapted to engage with an insert 6 in a recess 5 in the barrel extension 1a to lock the breech-block to the barrel extension when the parts are in the firing position. Plates 10 are arranged one on either side of the breech-block, being urged forward in relation thereto by spring 17 and having a pin and slot connection 20, 21, therewith. Each plate is fitted with a rod 11 adapted to be engaged by one arm 7 of a bell crank lever pivoted at 8 to a ring 12 secured to the barrel 1. The other arm of the lever engages with a pin 15 connected, as shown, to a non-recoiling part of the gun. When a shot is fired, the barrel and breech-block recoil together and the arms 7 impart an additional movement to the plates 10, thus moving the latter rearwardly with respect to the breech-block and thereby causing inclined surface 10a on the plates to engage and lift the member 4. Screw-threaded devices 13, 16 permit of fine adjustment of the pin 15 and also of the effective part of the arm 7 as shown. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) each bell-crank lever is replaced by a cog wheel which engages an adjustably mounted rack fixed to a non-recoiling part of the gun and with a second rack on each rod 11. In this modification, the rods 11 are not attached to the side plates but abut against them. The Provisional Specification describes also a construction in which the bell-crank levers are formed with toothed quadrants which engage with a fixed rack on the gun.
