Abstract

370,900. Automatic guns. WHITE, A. E., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.-(Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Co. ; Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.A.) Jan. 6, 1931, No. 502. [Class 92 (ii).] Relates to automatic guns of the kind having a longitudinally sliding breech-block 17 carrying a spring-actuated firing-pin 30 which is cocked automatically during recoil by a lever 32 carried by the breech bolt and engaging a recess in the fixed gun casing. According to the invention, a sear 46 carried by the breech block is adapted for horizontal transverse movement for engaging and releasing the firing-pin. The invention is shown applied to a recoil-operated gun of the Colt type as described, for example, in Specifications 133,329, 133,351, and 133,352, [all in Class 92 (ii), Ordnance &c.], and the horizontally-movable sear is shown arranged for operation, synchronously with the rotation of an aircraft propeller, by a trigger-motor M, Fig. 11, capable of being attached at either side of the gun casing. To facilitate the change from one side of the gun to the other certain parts of the sear-mechanism are reversible and the trigger-motor is interchangeable with the guide bracket 40 of a longitudinal rod 42 which serves for hand-operation of the breech-block through a pin 38 thereon, as shown in Fig. 2. The sear shown in Fig. 11 is connected by a bell-crank lever 47 with a vertically movable spring plunger 51 which keeps the sear in engagement with a notch 30c in the firing-pin 30 as shown in Fig. 12. The sear is released when the breech-block is in the forward locked position either by the member m of the triggermotor or by upward pressure on the lever 47 by a trigger-lever 53 operated by a pressbutton 58a arranged on the handle-block, as shown in Fig. 21. The sear and its operating- lever are reversed when the trigger-motor is arranged on the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 11. In a modification the lever 47 is dispensed with, the sear being biased by a horizontal spring plunger and moved horizontally by cam surfaces on a vertical spring- controlled slide. Specifications 365,315 and 365,787 also are referred to.
