Abstract

687,157. Cathode-ray tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 28, 1950. No. 7721/50. Class 39(i) An electron gun comprises a first anode focusing an electron beam to a first cross-over, a further system reforming the beam to a second cross-over at high potential in the central aperture of a second anode and means for shielding the beam up to first cross-over from extraneous fields and the further system, the electrodes being dimensioned and positioned so that a fully space charge limited beam with a constant cross-section of current density is obtained, and a modulating potential can be applied to the first anode without affecting the position and shape of the first cross-over. The cathode 10 is surrounded by a cylindrical electrode 14 with a flanged base, and the first anode 17 is formed as re-entrant frusto-conical portion of a sheet metal member 18 fitting in a cylinder 13. A centrally apertured shielding disc 19 closes the end of the cylinder 13 and a cylindrical shield electrode 20 with end plate 21 is held in alignment with the cylinder 13 by insulating bridge members 23. A cup-shaped second anode 24, 25 is held in position by ceramic bridges 26, spring fingers 27 spacing the assembly and connecting it to the wall coating of the cathode ray tube in which the gun is mounted. The beam 31 from the cathode is brought to a first cross-over at 32 and to a second cross-over 33 in the aperture of the anode 24. The voltage on cylinders 13, 14 and the first and second anode and the dimensions of the cathode and anode apertures are specified. The second cross-over is focused by magnetic means on to the fluorescent screen of the tube.
