Abstract

In a method of refining steel having a carbon content below 0.015 per cent, an oxygen-containing gas free from carbon is blown on to or through the melt in the presence of a reducing agent having a higher affinity for oxygen than has iron, at least one of the elements nitrogen or phosphorus being present in the melt or added during the blowing. The reducing agent may be silicon or a silicon alloy in amount which, during refining, does not exceed 0.5 per cent, or phosphorus in the presence of lime. The amount of phosphorus should be such that the carbon is reduced to 0.04 per cent before the phosphorus has fallen below 1.5 per cent. Ferrophosphorus may be added. The finished steel may have 0.006-0.150 per cent phosphorus, or 0.010-0.030 per cent nitrogen and if both nitrogen and phosphorus are present the sum of the phosphorus content plus 10 times the nitrogen content may be between 0.15 and 0.30 per cent. The reducing agent may be added in portions during the blowing and the final part of the blow may be nitrogen alone. Steels made by the process are stated to give good impact values at low temperatures, e.g. 14-15 kilogram-meters at minus 60 DEG C in the normalized, strained and aged condition.
