Class 110(i) A submersible pump comprises a cylindrical casing to opposite ends of which are detachably secured a discharge section and a suction section, fluid being admitted through inlet openings in the suction section to a number of impellers stacked on a driving shaft within the casing, each impeller being surrounded by an interstage diaphragm having a peripheral rib by which it abuts against the adjacent diaphragm; and a clamping ring being detachably secured to the casing adjacent the discharge section so as to clamp the ribs between the discharge and suction sections. Interstage diaphragms 30 and an upper bearing member 34 are disposed within a casing 16 and camped between a suction member 20 and a discharge member 42 by means of a clamping ring 48 which is screwed into the upper end of the casing 16. The impellers 60 are journalled in bearings 76 carried by the diaphragms 30. Bearings 40, 56 and 76 are rendered self-lubricating by being made of graphite or a composition containing graphite. The clearances between the front and back faces of each impeller and the adjacent diaphragms are such that the liquid being pumped forms, by capillary action, a film which acts as a lubricant for the faces. The pump shaft 54 has a tongue-and-slot engagement with the shaft 52 of the driving motor 10. The current supply leads are connected to the motor by a plug 110 which is surrounded by a sealing ring 114. Preferably, the leads are embedded in a layer 112 of wax or other waterproof sealing substance. The upper ends 98 of the leads pass through recesses in the members 20, 30, 34 and 42, a sealing gland 94 being provided.
