Abstract
214. Calvert, J. C. Jan. 4. Helico - centrifugal pumps; worm pumps.- In that type of centrifugal pump or fan in which the pumping is effected by centrifugal force and screw action combined, the impeller rotates in free air without any surrounding casing. Fig. 1 shows the impeller and the suction and delivery passages i, j j respectively. The impeller comprises a core c, blades b, and an outer cover a, preferably of the general shape shown. The whole is rotated in free air in bearings e, f. The receiving- chamber 3 rotates with the impeller, and is preferably shaped and fitted with a core 4, as shown. Leakage at the running joints is prevented by labyrinth or other stuffing-boxes k, l. The joint k may be supplied with fluid under pressure from the delivery side of the pump. In order to balance end-thrust, a spindle r, the end s of which runs in a piston q, may be attached to the impeller, and the piston subjected to the pressure of fluid led from the delivery side by a pipe t. In a modification, Fig. 4, the impeller core c is secured to a shaft d, and the receiving-chamber x is stationary. The running joint at 2 may be packed, or the slight injector action may be relied on to prevent leakage outwards. The core c may be dispensed with, the central space being closed by a disk u, Fig. 1. The area of the passages through the pump is kept constant, or decreases slightly towards the outlet.
