Abstract

Carbon black which has been obtained by the thermal decomposition of acetylene, and is to be used in the production of electrically-conductive rubber, is heat-treated to remove volatilizable organic compounds, e.g. is passed at the rate of 3 lb./hr. through a vertical furnace of 24 inches depth and 2 inches internal diameter maintained at 400 DEG C.ALSO:A vulcanized, electrically conductive rubber or rubber-like composition contains carbon black which has been produced by the thermal decomposition of acetylene, and has, before dispersal in the composition, been heat-treated to remove volatilizable organic compounds. The resistivities of two rubber compositions made from 100 parts of natural rubber, 120 parts of acetylene black and conventional vulcanizing ingredients, and identical except that one contained untreated acetylene black while the other contained acetylene black which had been treated by passage at the rate of 3 lb./hr. through a vertical furnace of 24 in. depth and 2 in. internal diameter maintained at 400 DEG C., were 11.00 and 3.81 ohm-cm. respectively.
