Abstract

685,413. Pressure gauges. WALTERS, B. Oct. 1, 1951 [March 3, 1951], No. 5182/51. Class 106 (ii). A piston-and-spring pressure gauge has a connector 12 with a co-operating unseating member 19 for application to the valve stem of a pneumatic tyre or other container, the connector 12 being formed with external screw-threads 23, 24 to permit the gauge to be screwed into the sparking- plug or similarly screwed opening of the cylinder of an internal combustion engine. A rubber covered cylinder 11 is screwed at one end into the connector 12 and is open at the other end for the protrusion of a sliding scale member 13 making a light push fit in the cylinder 11 so as to be held by friction in any position to which it is pushed by a piston 14 working in the cylinder when forced upwardly by air pressure admitted through the connector 12. A spring 16 is anchored at one end to the piston 14 and at the other end to a thin metal segment 17 nipped against a shoulder in the connector by the cylinder 11 and passing between adjacent coils of the spring 16. A central passage 18 in the connector links the cylinder 11 to a similar passage in the unseating member 19 screwed into a recess 21 against a rubber sealing disc 22. Two threaded adaptors 23, 24 are formed to co-operate with openings for 18 mm. and 14 mm. plugs and a recess 26 is formed at the end of each to seat a sealing washer. To facilitate insertion the connector 12 is knurled at 27 and formed with flats 28 for tightening. The connector may be set at an angle to the cylinder if desired, to improve the reading position.
