Abstract

685,303. Photographic emulsion layers. MASON & SONS, Ltd., E. N., and BAKER, T. T. Feb. 6.1951 [Dec. 2, 1949], No. 31050/49. Class 98 (ii). A silver halide emulsion is prepared by emulsifying a silver halide in a weak aqueous solution of gelatin, and mixing the emulsion with an aqueous emulsion of a polymerized acrylic or methacrylic ester. Silver halide emulsion may be prepared using 1 or 2 per cent by weight gelatin solution containing 1 part of gelatin to 10 parts of silver nitrate, and the emulsion, after ripening or digestion, is mixed with mechanical stirring with an aqueous emulsion of the polymerized acrylic or methacrylic ester, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate, having a pH of about 7, preferably in such pro. portions that the synthetic resin is present in 10 to 15 times the amount of gelatin. The emulsion may be a print-out or developing-out emulsion. The viscosity of the emulsion increases on standing. Paper may be coated with the emulsion at room temperature, and drying effected rapidly by heat. In an example, an aqueous solution of silver nitrate and citric acid is slowly poured with stirring into an aqueous solution of gelatin, ammonium chloride, and sodium potassium tartrate, an aqueous emulsion of polymethyl or other methacrylate is added, the whole allowed to stand, and the emulsion coated on baryta or other paper and dried by heat. Paper may also be coated with a washed or unwashed developing-out silver chloride or bromide emulsion mixed with a methacrylate emulsion, the final pH of the emulsion being about 7. Specification 674,752 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 674,752.
