Abstract

691,715. Photographic emulsions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Aug. 14, 1951 [Sept. 6, 1950], No. 19181/51. Class 98 (ii). A photographic colloid silver halide emulsion has an enhanced light-sensitivity due to the presence of 0.097 to 0.91 per cent by weight based on the weight of silver of tetracarboxymethylethylenediamine or of an alkali metal, ammonium, or substituted ammonium salt thereof, e.g. a salt derived from diethylamine, trimethylamine, cyclohexylamine, tetraethyl- or tetramethyl - ammonium hydroxide, guanidine, diphenylguanidine, or biguanidine. The compound may be added during the initial precipitation of the silver halide, at the beginning, during, or end of ripening, or at some other point prior to the end of final digestion. The emulsion may also contain sensitizing cyanine or styryl dyes. In example 1, the sodium salt of tetracarboxymethylethylenediamine is added at the start of the digestion of a washed gelatino silver iodobromide emulsion. An orthochromatic sensitizing dye, chrome alum, potassium bromide, and saponin may be added, and the emulsion coated on a cellulose acetate support. Example 3 is similar, and in example 2, the emulsion is a silver chlorobromide emulsion, and the dye a panchromatic sensitizer, and the potassium bromide is replaced by potassium chloride. In the examples, comparisons are drawn between the speed, gamma, and fog values with and without the sodium salt of tetracarboxymethylethylenediamine, and in example 3 it is shown that addition of such salt after digestion is ineffective. The emulsion may contain a sulphur sensitizer, e.g. allylthiourea, a thiocyanate, sodium thiosulphate, or sodium hyposulphite. The emulsion binder may be gelatine, agar-agar, a polyglycuronic acid, zein, collodion, a substantially hydrolysed cellulose acetate, a cellulose glycollate or lactate, an alkali metal salt of a cellulose phthalate, polyvinyl alcohol, partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate (including vinyl acetatestyrene and vinyl acetate-maleic acid interpolymers), or a water-soluble polyvinyl acetal. Specifications 376,746, 513,471, 519,895, 527,283 and 537,961 are referred to.
