Abstract

658,434. Photographic silver halide emulsions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. April 27, 1949, No. 11211. Convention date, April 29, 1948. [Class 98 (ii)] A light-sensitive colloid silver halide emulsion contains 0.005 to 0.05 mol. per cent of thallium based on the silver content of the emulsion. The silver halide may be silver iodobromide predominating in silver bromide. The emulsion has increased contrast and good speed, and thin layers coated therefrom are less subject to local desensitization caused by abrasive forces or kinking of the layers. In examples, thallous nitrate is added to the silver nitrate solution used in the preparation of a gelatino silver iodobromide emulsion or is added before the completion of the precipitation and ripening of such emulsion. Emulsions prepared by the first method may be orthochromaticallysensitized with a pseudocyanine dye or may be panchromatically sensitized, or may, after ripening and washing, be sensitized with sodium thiosulphate, treated with gold chloride and mercuric chloride, and digested. In a further example, hexathallium sorbitol is added to the silver nitrate. In another example, thallous nitrate is added to a silver chlorobromide emulsion during the initial states of of preparation. In each case the relative speed, contrast, and fog are compared with the corresponding data for similar emulsions not containing a thallium compound. With some emulsions, the kink susceptibility is also compared. The thallium compound may also be added as thallous acetate, chlorate, sulphate, cyanide, fluoride, or oxalate. The emulsion binder may be gelatine, agar-agar, a polyglycuronic acid, zein, collodion, a water-soluble cellulose derivative (e.g. a substantially hydrolysed cellulose acetate, a cellulose ester of a hydroxymonocarboxylic acid, e.g. lactic or glycollic acid, or an alkali metal salt of a cellulose ester of a dicarboxylic acid, e.g. phthalic acid), polyvinyl alcohol, a partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate or an interpolymer thereof with an unsaturated compound such as styrene or maleic acid, or a water-soluble polyvinyl acetal. Sulphur sensitizers such as allyl thiourea, allyl thiocyanate, or another thiocyanate may be added. Specifications 376,746, 513,471, 519,895, 537,961, 542,703, 542,704, and 551,659 are referred to.
