Abstract
Cellulose xanthate to be employed for the manufacture of viscose is prepared by treating cellulose with caustic soda solution of at least 25 per cent strength at a temperature above 50 DEG C. pressing and grinding the soda cellulose (soda cellulose II) so-obtained and sulphidizing with 100-200 per cent by weight, calculated on the cellulose, of carbon bisulphide in the liquid or vapour state at 40-80 DEG C. The solubility of the cellulose xanthate may be increased if the alkali cellulose is treated, prior to sulphidization, with a dilute, e.g. 12-25 per cent, caustic soda solution. In examples, caustic soda solutions of 35 and 36 per cent strength are employed at 80 DEG C., and sulphidization is effected with 150 and 200 per cent (calculated on the cellulose) carbon bisulphide at 60 DEG and 65 DEG C. respectively.
