Abstract
684,249. Bearings. SIMON (HOLDINGS), Ltd., H., and HOFFMANN MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. Feb. 7, 1951 [Feb. 27, 1950], No. 4941/50. Class 12 (i). A grinding roll of a roller mill has its shaft carried at each end in a journal unit which comprises a bearing of the type in which two rows of rollers with their cages are retained in an outer race or races which space the rows of rollers apart, whilst the outer assembly (comprising the rollers and their cages, races and housing) is free to slide along the inner race or races which is or are secured to the shaft, the inner roller tracks having between them a part constituting a spacing ring (which may be integral with or separate from the inner races) which is of the same external diameter as or of less diameter than the inner roller tracks and can serve as a journal surface in a machine tool when the outer assembly is not in position and the roll is to be machined. The roll b is mounted on a shaft a which has a sleeve c shrunk thereon. A collar m is provided to facilitate the withdrawal of the sleeve. The extremities of the outer surface of the sleeve c constitute bearing surfaces for rollers d, supported in cages e and retained in outer races f. In the embodiment shown the races f are carried by a housing g though in another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the inner surface of the housing g may be ground to form the outer race for the rollers d. In both embodiments the periphery of the housing is formed with a part-spherical seating carried within two co-operating. rings i and j which are retained against a shoulder n by a thrust-ring k. It is an object of the invention that the outer surface of the sleeve c may be held on its central part in a machine-tool to enable the periphery of the roll b to be machined and the rollers d and housings g may then be assembled by sliding them axially on the sleeve when the roll is to be mounted in its position of use. Instead of a unitary sleeve c; separate inner roller races and a spacing sleeve of the same or less diameter may be used.
