Abstract
683,629. Preventing corrosion. HUGHES & CO., Ltd., F. A., WAITE, W. G., and HIGGINS, W. F. Oct. 10; 1950 [Jan. 13, 1950], No. 909/50. Class 123 (i) A metal anode for the galvanic protection of a metal structure, buried or immersed in an aqueous solution, comprises a main anode 1, Fig. 1, and subsidiary anodes preferably in the form of plates 5 which are mechanically and electrically connected to the main anode by a bolt 2, having a conductor wire 11 leading to said structure, and are adapted to be completely consumed by electrolytic action during the initial period of use. Alternatively, a cylindrical main anode has subsidiary anodes in the form of flat annular rings or flanges integral therewith. The main and subsidiary anodes may be castings of a magnesium base alloy and commercially pure magnesium respectively or, alternatively, of zinc .or a zinc base alloy and a magnesium base alloy. In a modification the main anode 5 and subsidiary anodes, e.g. fins 7, form a star-shaped member, Fig. 3, which is mounted on a ferrule 8 adapted to be screwed into a tapped hole in the structure.
