Class 123(1) [Also in Group XXXV] An electrolytic system comprises an electrolyte, a cathode 21, an anode 22 and a reference electrode 38 normally connected to the cathode through a milli-volt meter 40 and a switch 44, 48, which is arranged to depolarize the electrode 38 by a further contact 52 on the switch by introducing a battery 51 into the circuit. The reference electrode may be silver-silver chloride and the e.m.f. of the circuit may be generated by suitable disposition of the anode and cathode in the electro-chemical series, or from a separate source such as a generator or rectifier connected between the anode 22 and another anode 23. A circuit providing automatic depolarization is described in the Specification which measures the e.m.f. between the electrode, and cathode, and operates a thermally, delayed relay circuit to depolarize the electrode when the electrodecathode voltage falls.
