Abstract
683,582. Angular bending. GREEN, L. B. Jan. 12, 1951 [Feb. 28, 1950], No. 912/51. Class 83 (iv). In a bending-machine a sheet is clamped between dies 43, 42 and a bending member 44 is swung about a pivot 135 and given a translation to effect bending. The machine may he single or double-ended. A flanged sheet 15 is clamped at the centre to a member 30, by a hand-operated lever 32, with the ends of the sheet overhanging the clamping die 42 and the bending die 44. A power cylinder is then actuated to lower the die 43 to clamp the sheet against the die 42. A second power cylinder is then operated to swing a wing member 41 carrying the bending die 44 about the pivot 135. During the swinging movement a shaft 110 in the member 41 is rotated by a link 125 engaging an adjustable stationary pivot 133. The shaft 110 carries a pinion 117 engaging a rack on the member 45. As the die 44 is swung about the die 43 a translatory motion is imparted to the die 44 to cause a true tangential rocking of the die 44 on the die 43. The ends of the die 44 carry inserts for holding the flanges during bending. The die 42 is carried on a head 13 on a carriage 39 adjustable on the bed 10 by hand-operated rack-and pinion gear 26. In a modification, Fig. 13, with die 152 shaped to effect a sharp bend, the translation mechanism is made inoperative by shifting the pivot 134 to a position in which the axes of the pivot 134 and the wing 41 coincide. An adjustable spring 89 engages the back of the carrier 45 to apply pressure to the die 44.
